Dirk Schapeler is Vice President Digital at Bayer based in San Jose, CA. He previously served as Head of Bayer's LifeScience iHUB innovation center that he founded in Mountain View in 2015. An engineer in electronics and mechanics he studied in Karlsruhe, Germany. Prior to that, he served as the CEO of Bayer's ViviTouch subsidiary Artificial Muscle Inc. in Sunnyvale. Dirk’s focus is on connecting with small and large technology companies to establish partnerships, new products, and service offerings and create new revenue streams in life sciences. His team includes data scientists, business model experts, and physicians. Digital technologies are very important to the future success of Bayer. Bayer is, therefore, building up competencies in digital technologies, especially with external partners.
The pharmaceutical industry is applying a data science approach combined with active machine learning in various areas which include the integration of experimental work and computational modeling, automation, big data analytics, and informatics. This session will focus on pharma preparations and applications of AI and Machine Learning across drug discovery and development. Various examples will demonstrate how pharma is harnessing the opportunity of large data sets to predict and improve translation of preclinical findings to the specific human disease conditions to be evaluated in clinical studies.
