Session Abstract – PMWC 2018 Silicon Valley

Session Synopsis: This session will cover the major advances in digital health with a focus on clinical trial and real world evidence for the application of new mobile health devices, and sensor-based technologies in patient care and research. We will hear from physician leaders in data science, informatics, clinical research, and technology development on how effective programs are created for the future delivery of healthcare.

Biography

Sanjeev Bhavnani MD is a cardiologist and physician-scientist in healthcare innovation and practice transformation at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. Dr. Bhavnani was a Qualcomm Wireless Health Scholar at TSRI where he was involved in the design of next generation digital medicine clinical trials. As a principle investigator on several studies, he has designed trials using nanosensors, wireless mHealth and smartphone-connected devices, handheld ultrasound, lab-on-a-chip technologies and cloud-based data platforms across various patient populations, and to assess the impact of new technologies on healthcare quality, costs, and outcomes. These trials have been executed across the US and in resource limited areas – Uganda, India, and Mexico – were he and his team have designed the first smartphone-connected mHealth clinics . To date, these mHealth clinics have enrolled 20,000+ patients. Dr. Bhavnani works with teams of clinicians, researchers, biomedical engineers, translational informatics, and biostatisticians. He serves on the innovation advisory boards of several national medical societies and has worked with digital health think tanks to develop the CONNECT legislation and 21st Century Cures Act. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and clinical informatics and has been recognized with a Health Catalyst Award and 40-under-40 life science innovators in San Diego.

Biography

Dr. Rumsfeld is an internationally recognized cardiovascular health services researcher, and a thought leader in healthcare innovation. His research has primarily centered on cardiovascular quality of care and outcomes, patient-reported outcome measures, and the association between depression/mental health and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Rumsfeld is currently the Chief Innovation Officer for the American College of Cardiology, with a focus on digital health, advanced clinical analytics, and precision medicine. He is Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Previously, he was National Director of Cardiology for the US Veterans Health Administration and Director of the VA’s Clinical Assessment, Reporting, and Tracking Program, a national quality of care and patient safety program for the VA health system. He was previously the Chief Science Officer for the American College of Cardiology’s National Cardiovascular Data Registries and is past-Chair of the American Heart Association’s Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Scientific Council.

His specific experience includes market leading EHR solution providers, a medical device start-up effort, as well as early stage analytics solution development.

Dr. Shreibati is a board-certified cardiologist and Medical Director at AliveCor (Mountain View, CA), a medtech leader in pioneering FDA-cleared machine learning techniques to enable proactive cardiovascular care. AliveCor’s KardiaMobile is the most clinically validated mobile EKG solution on the market, and KardiaBand is the first FDA-cleared medical device accessory for Apple Watch. Dr. Shreibati completed her medical school, Internal Medicine residency, and Cardiology fellowship training at Stanford University. She also has a Master’s degree in Health Services Research, a field that evaluates the effects of financial incentives, organizational structures and government policies on the health care delivery system. She has expertise in analysis of Medicare claims and in cost-effectiveness analyses.
